Fishermen associate Greers Ferry Lake with walleye fishing. A national walleye tournament is held on Greers Ferry Lake every year. The world record walleye weighing more than 22 pounds was caught here. The largemouth and smallmouth bass, the spotted or Kentucky bass, the striped bass/white bass hybrids, the lake trout, crappie and bream are all species found in the lake.

The new world's record hybrid bass weighing 27 pounds, 5 ounces was caught on Greers Ferry Lake by a local guide in April 1997. He fought the fish for 25 minutes. Jerry Shaum of Shirley knew he had a huge fish on the line. He held on until the battle was won. He was trolling in 45 feet of water.

The Little Red River feeds Greers Ferry Lake. A world-class fishery for brown trout and rainbow trout, the Little Red River produced another world record fish: a 40-pound, 4-ounce brown trout, in 1992, beating the earlier record catches of 28 to 29 pounds.

Hiking

Mossy Bluff and Buckeye Trail
This self-guided trail meanders approximately 1.6 miles round trip along a wooded bluff overlooking the Little Red River below Greers Ferry Dam. Numbered posts along the trail mark the trail features described in a comprehensive brochure published by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. At the trail's end, visitors can rest at the Overlook and enjoy the spectacular view before heading back.

The trail is rocky in places. Wear comfortable shoes. There are approximately 94 steps altogether near the Overlook. The trail is accessed at the Visitor Center near the dam on Highway 25 outside Heber Springs. The Visitor Center offers a 20-minute audio-visual program, "The Saga of the Little Red: A Tale of Two Centuries," and an exhibit area. Information services and restrooms are available. Sugar Loaf Mountain Island National Recreation Trail
Actually two trails of different difficulty, the Sugar Loaf Mountain National Nature Trail was developed by the Corps of Engineers in 1971 after the lake had filled and the peak of Sugar Loaf Mountain rose 540 feet above the water. The trail can be accessed only by water and a courtesy dock is available on the southeast side of the mountain. For those without a boat, the marina at Fairfield Bay (501-884-6030) offers a ferry to the mountain.

This is a beautiful, unspoiled nature hike for all four seasons. Photo opportunities abound and there are numerous rest stops along the trail to allow visitors to set their own pace. The Terrace Trail is of Moderate difficulty with moderate slopes. It circles the base of the mountain top. It is 1.6 miles roundtrip from the boat dock. Mule Trail is a Difficult trail that leads to the mountain top. Mule Trail has very steep steps, steep stairs, high bluffs, and difficult walking conditions. It is 0.5 miles in length. Area Information

Greers Ferry Lake was established in 1963. The Greers Ferry Dam structure was dedicated by the late President John F. Kennedy.

With around 32,500 acres of lake surface to accommodate boaters and fishermen, the fishing at the lake is good throughout most of the year. Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has stocked every game fish native to the State of Arkansas.

Little Red River that flows out of the dam and tributes to producing some of the largest walley in the world. Elevation of the lake at top flood control pool is around 487 feet above sea level. It is ranked one of the most pollution free lake in the nation. This provides vistors great swimming, fishing, scuba diving and many more great lake activities! Greers Ferry is the ranked seventh in tourist location points in Arkansas.
